Two Things I’ve Been Keeping Secret

What happens when you outgrow the business you built? I’m sharing what led me to sell my clinic, and what I’ve learned since going solo. If you’re navigating a shift in your work or wondering whether you’re allowed to want something different now… this one’s for you.

Happy 2-Tips Tuesday!

Here are two ideas to consider this week.

By Jennifer Broxterman, RD

1. Sometimes the first step to freedom is firing Food Poisoning Friday.

Back in January, I let go of an employee I’ll call Food Poisoning Friday Felicia because how many times can one adult woman mysteriously come down with “food poisoning” on a Friday?

Every week, same thing. Needed to leave early to “rest.”

And listen, I’ve worked in digestive health for over a decade. I’m not quick to call someone a liar, but I definitely know the difference between a GI flare and a made-up excuse to start your weekend early.

Letting her go gave me back 10–12 hours a week I used to spend putting out fires she created inside my business. Fires that kept me managing underperformance instead of doing the work I actually like — nutrition coaching.

Then there was the Gen Z new hire who proudly declared she wouldn’t work past 5:01 p.m. (yes, even paid!), wouldn’t do public speaking because it was “too stressful,” and couldn’t believe she wasn’t making $100k right out of school.

She was lovely. But she was also allergic to extra effort.

So, I offloaded both.

I paid out Food Poisoning Felicia’s severance and moved on. The Gen Z no-evenings-no-speaking contract didn’t get renewed when her “tryout” year was up.

And I didn’t hire again.

Instead, I raised my rates. A lot.

I simplified everything. I went fully remote. I became a very-well-paid solopreneur again, working from my new house with a forest and river view. No more last-minute Friday cancellations due to mystery illnesses.

Food Poisoning Felicia would hate how happy and guilt-free I feel about my decision!

And now, the clinic I used to run… the three-quarters-of-a-million-dollar house with a Bod Pod and a full staff, is back on the market as a gorgeous residential home. Fully staged. Beautiful video tour.

And yes, you’re allowed to be nosy.

2. Wrong Door? Get Out Fast.

“It’s better to admit you’ve walked through the wrong door than spend your whole life in the wrong room.”
– Dan Martell

The day I let go of that second team member, I drove home and hit every. single. green. light. Not kidding, it was 30 minutes straight of all greens, baby!

You know those drives where it feels like angels are flying ahead of your car flipping the signals?

The universe was saying, “Yup. That was the right call.”

I thought I should build a big team.
I thought being just a coach wasn’t enough.
So I joined the masterminds.
I executed the scaling playbooks.
I hired, trained, and managed the big team.

But the more I tried to grow the manager-of-managers version of success, the less I liked my actual workday.

It stopped being fun.

When I noticed my ability to shoot out Care Bear Rainbows of love, joy, and happiness was starting to dull, I knew I had to make a change.

So I left the room.

I came back to what I love. I coach 1-on-1 nutrition clients inside my practice, at rates that reflect the results I deliver and the freedom I’ve built.

I'm booked 6–8 weeks out.
I just counted 29 people on my cancellation list.

In the past six months, I’ve flipped things from a management headache into a dream solopreneur schedule I love living inside.

If you’re a gym owner, coach, or health pro wondering if you might be in the wrong room, let’s talk.
