The twice-a-year email every nutrition coach should send

Learn the twice-a-year email nutrition coaches can send to stay top of mind, generate more referrals, and sign more clients without constant marketing.

2-Tips

By Jennifer Broxterman, RD

Kind Nerd Note: Send this email twice a year to stay top of mind, generate more referrals, and sign more nutrition clients without constantly marketing yourself.

Tip #1:
Send this twice-a-year email

On top of whatever you’re already doing to market your nutrition coaching business, twice a year, email your personal and professional network.

Share Five Things:

  1. Personal life update
  2. Something you’re working toward or excited about
  3. A book, podcast, resource, or idea you’ve loved lately
  4. One specific way they could help you
  5. Ask what they’re working on and how you could help

I got this idea from Terry Rice, who shared that the first time he tried it, he thought it felt a little goofy. He sent his update to 250 people and got 40 replies within two days. One of those replies turned into a speaking opportunity that booked him. And more importantly, 250 people who already knew him suddenly knew what he was up to again.

I love this idea for nutrition coaches because most of us already have a much bigger network than we realize. Former colleagues. Classmates. Past clients. Professors. Gym friends. Healthcare professionals. Neighbors. Parents from your kids’ school. People you worked with three jobs ago who still think highly of you but may have absolutely no idea what you’re doing now.

The takeaway: Two emails a year can be an entire networking system. Stay top of mind, so more referrals and clients come your way later.

Try this: Set a recurring reminder for the first week of January and July. Then write your first update.

Which brings me to Tip #2.

Tip #2:
What I’ve Been Up To Lately

1. Personal Life Update

I just got back from the most epic 40th birthday trip, even though I’m about to turn 42 on October 23rd. My husband actually gifted me this trip for my 40th birthday, but the off-road motorcycle adventure course was so booked up that we had to plan it almost two years out. And it was WELL worth the wait. We spent three days in British Columbia learning how to ride an adventure motorcycle off-road, including riding up a mountain on rough terrain. Then we headed to Tofino, where I spent my time surfing and hiking through old-growth forests (my happy place).

2. Something I’m working on

For most of my career, I’ve done nutrition coaching one-on-one. The problem is that I’m now so booked up that I literally don’t have enough of me to go around. So I’m building something new: a group nutrition coaching program that I can run regularly for cohorts of clients. I also know a lot of gym owners who KNOW nutrition coaching would help their members, but don’t have enough demand to hire a full-time or even part-time Registered Dietitian or nutrition coach. So I’m exploring a fractional nutrition coaching model where I could become the nutrition coach for multiple gyms. They bring the program to their members, I handle the nutrition coaching, and we share the revenue. I’m developing the program and talking to gym owners now, which leads nicely into #4 below. :)

3. Book recommendation

The Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal. It completely changed the way I think about stress. We spend so much time trying to reduce stress, but stress is often connected to the things that give our lives meaning: responsibility, relationships, parenting, meaningful work, and caring about things that matter to us. I’ve been thinking a lot more about how we become resilient through stress instead of always trying to get rid of it. Highly recommend.

4. One way you could help me

If you own a gym, work with a gym, or know a gym owner who would love to offer nutrition coaching but doesn’t have the capacity to hire a dietitian or nutrition coach, I’d love an introduction. I’m looking for a few gyms interested in testing this group coaching model with me. I run the nutrition program, they offer it to their members, and we share the revenue. If someone comes to mind, just hit reply.

5. And now, your turn

What are you working on right now? Seriously, hit reply and tell me. And if there’s someone in my network I could connect you with, an introduction I could make, or some other way I could be useful, tell me that too.
