The $150 Billion Longevity Lie

Most longevity supplements won’t extend your lifespan. Research shows real healthspan gains come from strength training, lean muscle mass, sleep, whole foods, stress regulation, and strong social connection. Learn how simple daily habits can put you in the top 1% of healthiest adults.

2-Tips

By Jennifer Broxterman, RD

Kind Nerd Note: Longevity is built on behaviors, not products.

Tip #1:
How To Be in the Top 1%

I send this postcard to every new nutrition client after they sign-up to work with me. I also have it framed in my office waiting room, and I’ve caught clients secretly snapping pictures of it on their cell phones.

It’s a good reminder for living a great life that will put you in the top 1% of healthiest people alive.

If all you did was:

  • Walk
  • Have fun
  • Read books
  • Strength train
  • Enjoy fresh food
  • Make time for family
  • Build local community
  • Ignore internet fights
  • Drink mostly water
  • Quiet your ego
  • Be playful
  • Breathe
  • Sleep

You’ll be in the top 1% without even trying.

This advice feels more relevant than ever in this crazy, crazy world we live in.

If I’m having a bad day, I simply look at that list, and pick an action that will make me feel better in the moment.

How about you? Is there something that will make your day better?
Go do that right now. :)

Tip #2:
Longevity Supplements Are A Scam

Longevity supplements are (mostly) a scam. A big one.

The supplement industry is worth $150 billion. They prey on people’s biggest fears and insecurities, and sell you the solution in one little pill, powder, or potion.

Supplements thrive because they:

  • Require no real lifestyle change
  • Can outsource hard work (“I took my pills, so I’m set”)
  • Create an illusion of control

They let people avoid the uncomfortable truth:

Longevity is built through habits and behaviors, not products.

Plus, when it comes down to how long you’re going to live, there’s a degree of genetics and luck at play.

Longevity “biohacking” and “supplement stacks” look and feel advanced, but they mostly scam people out of their hard-earned money. It also distracts from the lifestyle habits that actually move the needle when it comes to a longer lifespan (total years lived) and better healthspan (years spent in good health).

Most large, long-term longevity studies show zero years of life extension from routine supplements in healthy adults.

Supplements can be useful in specific cases.

They are not the foundation to living to a healthy old age.

What is?

  • Exercise + protecting lean muscle mass
  • Consistent sleep
  • Eating real, whole food
  • Stress regulation
  • Strong social connections

You cannot tablet muscle.

You cannot capsule sleep.

You cannot powder lifelong friendships.

Longevity is built on behaviors, not products.

Sometimes, you just have to spread the word, even when you’re mid-workout and sweaty.
