Kind Nerd Note: Emotional intelligence is the skill that turns good coaches into unforgettable ones. People hire you for your knowledge, but they stay for how you make them feel.
Tip #1:
7 Sentences That Make You a More Emotionally Intelligent Coach
1. Be soft on the person, firm on the problem.
If a client falls off track, separate them from the behavior. That keeps trust intact while still addressing what needs to change.
2. Assume every client is here to teach you something.
The best coaches stay curious. Each client helps you grow your range.
3. Pause and make eye contact (even on Zoom).
Silence is powerful. It shows confidence and gives people space to reflect.
4. Help clients feel Seen, Heard, and Remembered.
When someone says, “You really get me,” you’ve nailed it.
5. Use their name, often and naturally.
A person’s favorite sound is their name, and using it builds rapport.
6. Replace “Yes, but…” with “Yes, and…”
It validates their idea and gently expands it, so they stay open to hearing more.
7. When giving feedback, lead with care.
They’ll hear your honesty when they feel your empathy.
