The Scale Won’t Fix Body Image (This Will)

The scale won’t fix body image. Even at your “goal weight,” that critical voice can stick around. Learn why confidence isn’t about the number and what actually builds peace: self-care, kind self-talk, and daily actions that help your body feel good.

2-Tips

Kind Nerd Note: If a client didn't love their body at 150 or 120, the issue was never the weight. Help them shift the focus to care, not control.

Tip #1:
You can get down to 120 lb, and still not be happy.
(A short lesson on body image.)

As a Registered Dietitian who helps people recover from eating disorders, I work with people at all weights, shapes, and sizes. ⁣

Most are unhappy at their current weight, no matter how much they lose over time. ⁣

Or they look back at old pictures and say, “I wish I looked like that now. But I remember feeling fat back then.”

That’s because the “diet culture / ED goalpost” keeps moving. You can hit 165 and your brain says “ok but 150.” You hit 150 and it says “ok but 140.” You hit 140 and it says “ok but 120.” And even at 120, the voice often doesn’t go away, because it’s trained to look for flaws instead of safety and care.⁣

And if it’s not about the actual number on the scale, you can insert
chasing leanness or more muscle / less fat into this story.⁣

What actually creates peace and happiness isn’t the number. It’s how you care for yourself. ⁣

Self-love, kind and helpful self-talk, and healthy daily actions that make your body feel good. Things like: ⁣

  • nourishing whole foods⁣
  • proper hydration⁣
  • movement that feels good⁣
  • rest & sleep⁣
  • rich social connection⁣
  • healthy & kind self-talk⁣

Those are what build self-esteem and a healthy self-image.⁣

When you’re caring for your body well and treating yourself with respect, confidence shows up regardless of the number. The scale doesn’t create that, the care does.
