Japanese Word for Lonely Mouth

Culturally, many people can relate to eating for non-hunger reasons. In Japan, they even have a special word for it: kuchisabishii, which translate to “lonely mouth”.

Kuchisabishii:
Japanese word for a “lonely mouth”

Here’s the thing. If you simply ask people to count calories or follow restrictive meal plans, you’ll miss the opportunity to discuss the bigger picture of their lives and how behavior change really works.

Great coaches help clients get curious about their relationship with food. Do they eat when they are:

 bored?

 anxious?

 lonely?

 happy?

 sad?

 stressed?

 on auto-pilot?

What's going on emotionally to create a "lonely mouth"?

One of the best parts of being a great nutrition coach is when people tell us that they now feel really intentional and in-control with food, instead of the other way around.

So feel free to use this Japanese word kuchisabishii as a conversation starter with your nutrition clients.

What a fun new word to ponder and spark a discussion around mindful eating!
